There is Light

Little blog of mine.. The last thing I have written in my drafts is an update on the baby at 10 weeks from August 25, 2014. It's been so long since I've opened this site, it took me a minute to remember how to access it. It's 3:00 a.m. and I couldn't sleep, and somehow, my thoughts landed here.

I have heartburn and the baby has the hiccups. So, I'm awake. Instead of tossing and turning and waking my little family, all cozied up together in our tiny little room (more on that later..), I got up and came here to write.

We went to Georgia for Christmas. We spent 10 blissful days at my parents' house. Everyone was home from college so we spent our time at home together, hanging out with my siblings (I love them so), being silly, eating a lot, just enjoying being together, celebrating, and having nothing to do and nowhere to be. Emmett being spoiled rotten all the while. I hung out with my parents who I miss so much. We celebrated my brother Luke's engagement and got to know his sweet fiance. We were sick, the whole lot of us, with fevers and flu and sinus infections, but what's a little vomiting and fever when it's Christmas and we're all together? I just remember the bliss.

We flew home after 10 awesome days. It was a long day of hard goodbyes and lots of traveling and we were so ready to get into our own beds when we pulled up to the house after 8:00 that night. I got Emmett out of the car while Ray went to unlock the doors. I heard him say a couple of times "Something's not right," but I thought he just meant the lock was stuck or something. When he opened the door...

Most of the house, our sweet little rental we've come to love so much, was under 2 inches of water. His feet sloshed as he walked inside. We heard loud sounds of water pouring onto tile, but I still didn't comprehend what had happened- my pregnant brain is slow these days. Then as we entered the living room we saw a huge gaping hole where our ceiling had been and pink insulation covering our couches and the ugly peach carpet. We knew it was bad.

We called our landlord and Ray's dad. She called a neighbor and her son who lives close by and we soon had the water turned off. We thought a pipe had burst from the little bout of freezing temperatures that we'd missed over the last couple of days. Turns out we were half right.

We didn't panic. We didn't even talk much about our wet things or what we may have lost. It was late and we went into survival mode. My mother-in-law was with us and she quickly drove Emmett and I to her house for the night while Ray and the other men stayed behind to assess the damage and close up the house for the night. There wasn't much for us to do at that point so we all went to bed.

There were so many ups and downs that first week, and into the second. We are still staying at my in-laws' (they are saints!), all three of us in a tiny bedroom. Our things are all packed away in our garage while they work on the house, so we're still living out of the suitcases we brought to Georgia. Now that it's been almost three weeks and it looks like renovations will take at least another three, we're thinking of ways to settle in for the long haul and make things easier for us and Ray's family.

We've looked for short-term rental options, knowing this process of rebuilding will take some time, but we haven't found a good fit. Two weeks ago I wouldn't believe my own ears at hearing this, but it's starting to look like staying put at Ray's parents' is the best option for us. Living, all three of us, in a tiny room in a crowded house seemed so awful at first, but it's amazing what you can get used to. Now, I think it's kind of cozy. Emmett loves being able to see us from his little crib next to our bed, and I love waking up and hearing him breathe and being able to see him whenever I want during the night. It's such a comfort, this late in my pregnancy, when my emotions are strong and I'm starting to mourn the last weeks with him as my one and only baby boy.

There have been so many ups and downs. At first, we thought we'd lost quite a bit to water damage, but we were able to dry and clean our white couches. They were such a dream come true and we would have been pretty devastated to lose them. Even Ray's TV didn't suffer too much and after a bit of drying seems to work like a charm. The only thing we couldn't salvage was his computer. That was a decent blow but we've already replaced it and I'm counting my blessings. None of Emmett's baby clothes were even touched by the water. Now that some time has passed, I see all of the little blessings in this.

When you're in your third trimester and your house gets ripped apart right in front of your eyes, you kind of panic a bit. I spent the first couple weeks in a fog of fear and anxiety and intense emotional stress, worrying about how this will all work out. Will the house be finished in time for the baby to come? How will we break Emmett of this habit of sleeping all together? How is he going to handle all of this chaos? I want so badly to give him an easy, stress-free few weeks before this baby comes and changes his whole world so drastically. My heart hurt as I mourned the peace I want so much for my family right now.

Everything seemed so BIG. My emotions were on high-alert and it didn't take much to send me crashing. One day as I dropped Emmett off at school, his first day back after the holidays and me missing him after being together so much for a few weeks, I dropped my phone and shattered the screen. I'm embarrassed at how much I cried that morning. Every little thing felt like that last straw, or at least another straw that broke my back and sent me careening into the depths of despair. It feels a bit silly looking back but I felt like my life was spiraling out of control and I was desperate for a little bit of good news. The Apple store fixed my phone for free that afternoon.

Yesterday, Ray finally met with a contractor and the insurance adjustor (our landlord's homeowner's insurance is covering all of the damages and beginning renovations soon) to discuss plans for the renovations. They found asbestos in the ceilings (which had fallen into the floor and spread throughout the house) initially, so they tore out all of the carpet, all of the ceilings, and two feet of drywall at floor-level throughout the house. One of the bathrooms has been gutted and every room but the kitchen and our bathroom will be completely refitted.

So now, we're almost three weeks out. I'm almost 32 weeks pregnant. But I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not even all that stressed anymore. I'm starting to see the light.

Sometimes I think maybe I'm being dramatic about all of this, or that maybe people see it that way. But we loved our house. We felt so settled there and had really turned it into a home over the last couple of months. Coming home and seeing all of our things wet and covered in debris is incredibly disconcerting and overwhelming. I knew right away that things are just things and that what really mattered was my family, and thank God we were safe. But finding yourself suddenly without the home you loved so much, at 29 weeks pregnant, is a violent thing. Living out of a tiny room in your in-laws' home isn't easy for anyone, and it's not easy for them having us. But we're all making the best of it and it won't be forever. We're getting through this, one day at a time.

There's light. I can see light.

Ode to our back yard

When I look at our back yard, I think "a family lives here."

My parents' back yard is wide open. There are no fences in their neighborhood, so one yard blends into another to create a magical space. As a child, it was green grass as far as the eye could see.

Each afternoon, or first thing in the morning in summer, all the neighbor kids would gather in our common back yard to play. We'd make mud pies on one neighbor's back porch, climb on picnic tables and swing from rope swings, and jump from tire to tire at the neighborhood playground. In the evenings we played capture the flag. I remember running and laughing and warm summer nights.

As a teenager we sat on those same picnic tables. The play turned from mud pies to card games, but that back yard still held magic for me.

When I moved to Arizona, I missed that green, green grass. The desert has it's own kind of beauty, but grass is a part of me. When Ray proposed, I knew right away that I wanted our wedding reception to be held in my parents' back yard. To me, it's the most beautiful place I know. That night was magic, and the back yard was as beautiful as it's ever been.

Since then, Ray and I have dreamed of having a back yard of our own, with green grass for our children. We've had patios, but never grass. I wanted Emmett to grow up with a back yard. To play with roly polies, make mud pies and run through sprinklers. I want him to have a childhood like mine.

We have that now, in our sweet little rental home. A back yard of our own, with green grass. This little rental isn't ours, not really. But it's perfect for us now. It feels like home, and that back yard.. It's magic.

Rambling Thoughts On Being Content

I've been thinking a lot about this blog lately. It has become such a fun outlet for me, somewhere I love to go in the few minutes between work assignments or while Emmett naps. I love all of the friendships I've made, love reading your comments and reading your blogs. It's a blessing for me.

There are so many changes I'd like to make to this space. I want a redesign, something new and fresh and not so cutesy. I just can't justify putting money into this space right now, with a new house to furnish and an old one we're still paying for (pray it sells soon!). That's sort of the space I'm in right now in our life. There are so many things I want to do in our house, most of them costing money, but the money just isn't there yet so I'm waiting and dreaming and working on being content with what I do have.

So for now, I'll be working on the content of the blog more than the way it looks. I'll be working on my photography, trying to make beautiful images to keep in this space. Since I've been home more, I've had time to cook and bake for the first time in.. ever! I've really been enjoying that part of our life, so I'll be sharing more recipes with you. I will also be slowly, slowly working on adding furniture and decorating this sweet new space, so I'll be talking about that here. And of course there's Emmett. You'll see plenty of him here too. :)

It's easy to think about the future, about all of the changes I want to make. Lately I've found myself getting caught up in that too easily, giving in to anxiety and discontentment. So I'm working hard to stay in the present, to work with what I've got, and to be at peace where I am in this moment. I'm excited to challenge myself to make the most of the things we have in boxes, to re-imagine the pieces in my closet. It's a great exercise in contentment, which is something I want so badly in all areas of my life.

I read a quote on Instagram yesterday that went something like this: "I make myself rich by being happy with less." That really struck me and made me realize I'm spending too much time wanting more more more and not enough time loving the things, and the people, that I do have. So, here's to contentment, peace and quiet, and loving my life.

Currently. Nine

Thinking about: My mind, and how it's always racing these days. Is that just motherhood? I used to have a quiet mind. I used to be able to relax, rest, to just be. These days, my mind races with the million things that need doing, the things that need worrying about. Of course I know that worrying doesn't help. I know that God is in control of my life and that my worrying is of absolutely no consequence to how things will turn out. But still, I worry.

This weekend we moved into our new place. It was a crazy weekend, full of ups and downs and sometimes I feel like my whole life is an emotional roller coaster. The lows are low and the highs are higher than I knew they could be. But life didn't use to have those highs and lows for me. I never thought of myself as an emotional person, until I had Emmett and even more after Oliver. My heart is more sensitive than ever before, and my mind is full of thoughts and anxieties, day in and day out. Resting in the quiet is harder than ever before.

My husband worked so hard this weekend to get us moved in and settled before the new week began. He works so hard for us, always. I'm struck by him, by his selflessness and his servant's heart, so often. He's a good father and a gentle and loving husband. When I see the good in him it's almost like a mirror, reflecting back on me my own flaws. When I see him do so much good for us, it makes me realize all the ways I'm failing to do good for he and Emmett and makes me want to be better.

Over the weekend I was reflecting on that saying (there are probably a few sayings) about how you marry one person, but that person changes over and over again and marriage is about falling in love with that new person over and over again. Or learning to love the new person. The saying is fuzzy in my mind but the point is, my husband is still the man I married two and a half years ago, only better. He is everything I thought he would be as a husband and a father. But am I? I feel like a very different person than I was when we married. With more thoughts, more anxieties, more fears and worries, and more love too. I'm not sure if I'm who he was expecting when he married me, but I do know that he loves me still, and loves me well.

Emmett insisted on wearing a tutu at our friend Evie's last week.
He makes a cute ballerina. ;)
Watching: The Oscars! I only watched until about nine last night but I'm still buzzing over it. I love a good red carpet and last night did not disappoint! Lupita Nyong'o was so beautiful, and that speech she gave had me in tears! And of course JLaw was her usual beautiful, awkward, amazing self.  I also loved Jared Leto's speech. And just looking at Jared Leto all night. Here's a fun summary.

Looking forward to: Just living, as a family, in our new house. I'm looking forward to afternoons in the back yard with Emmett. Dinners just the three of us. Quiet evenings at home with Ray, binge-watching House of Cards and eating dinner in front of the tv. I'm looking forward to having friends over to play or have dinner, sharing our home again. I'm excited to decorate, to clean and do laundry in my own laundry room! To hang pictures in Emmett's room and set up his little play room. All the things we've been missing the past few months. We are so excited to be moved in to our own place again!

Bubbles with friends in our back yard yesterday. That yard is my favorite part of this new house!

Pinspiration: New Home

Follow Anna Kate Wilby's board Home Inspiration on Pinterest.

I've been thinking a lot about this new house we'll be moving in to. Ray and I are both anxious to move, but trying so hard not to let that spark discontent in our hearts for the place we are now. We have loved living with Ray's parents. It's been amazing for Emmett and such a gift to us financially. It has been a time of rest, of letting go of our worries and stresses and just being all together as an extended family. But we're ready to go out on our own again now, so the waiting is difficult.

Instead of sitting around wishing and waiting, I've started pinning! I have so many ideas for how I want our new space to feel, and of course Pinterest is the best place to keep ideas all together.

We are renting, so I'm looking forward to embracing the white walls and neutral tones in the house. I've been tending towards white anyway, with grays and natural notes and little pops of color as accents. I can't wait to take a blank canvas and make it ours, little by little. A friend of ours has been renting this particular house for a few years, but she just got married and moved away. So for me, it will be a nice little challenge to take her ideas for the house and rethink them to make the space work better for us. Luckily for me, Ray is really great at looking at a room and having a vision for the best use of space.

I'm excited to take the energy and excitement Ray and I are feeling and put it to good use on Pinterest. I hope it makes the waiting a little bit easier and helps us to really cultivate a vision for our new place together. When we were married I moved in to the home he owned and lived in with his friends, so while I was able to give it a woman's touch, it never felt like a place we would have chosen together. It will be wonderful to have a fresh start, in a place we can call our own, as a family.

Also, I really want to build a garden. If you have one, or have any expertise in gardening, I'd love to hear about it! I will be pinning lots of gardening ideas, and Ray's brother is an expert in sustainable gardening and agriculture, but I am clueless so I can use all the help I can get. I just love the idea of growing fresh fruits and vegetables in our own yard, along with flowers and herbs. Emmett eats berries like it's his job, so they are also at the top of my list for things I'd like to grow!

Follow me on Pinterest to see more of what I'm looking for in this new place of ours. And if you love Pinterest as much as I do, let me know so I can follow you!

Thanksgiving in Georgia

Thanksgiving week in Georgia (3 weeks later!), in photos from my iPhone:

This was such a fun and special week! We loved being with our Georgia family so so much, and miss them like crazy! We're planning lots of Facetime and Skype dates over the next few weeks and especially over Christmas. Hopefully that will make us feel like we're not so far away!
